Born and raised in McLean.  Left  there in 1959 after high school graduation, for the army, and returned in 1962.  Attended and graduated from Clarendon Jr. College in 1963, and then onward to West Texas State U.   Majored  in Math, and minor in Physics.  (Thanks Mr Bunch and Mr Dwyer)   After leaving there, I worked for Boeing, and a boat yard for a few months, then got married, moved to Virginia,  in 1967, attending a special government school and spent the next 20 years overseas in places such as Ethiopia, Greece, Hong Kong, Venezuela, and England, then returned to the states where I retired after 8 more years.  Worked in severeal short term jobs and finally  at the local Community College where I retired again after 5 years.  Presently, we live in Madison County Va, where I work about 4 months out of the year, as an educational guide at a farm during earlly spring and again in early fall.    We teach, mostly kindergarten thru 5th grades about subjects such as egg candeling, pond netting, river quality, gardening, pig farming, tracking, apple growing, harvesting and sorting sheds.  We look at the Virginia school Standards of Learning, and provide support to the school teachers mto insure their students have been introduced to many of the subjects which appear on the SOL annual testing.

We have two sons and a daughter, and 5 grandsons, at the moment.  Two of those grandsons are in the local Scout Troop where one just joined, and the other is a First Class Scout with 9 Merit badges.  I still am involved (in Scouting for 63 years now) as the county Scouting Commisioner, having steped down from being the supervising (ADC) Commissioner for 5 counties in centeral Virginia.  Sad to hear that Troop 25 in Mclean has been defunct now for several years.  I was first (only?) Eagle Scout to come out of McLean.

Setting back now and enjoying gardening, Scouting and Ham Radio (Got interested in that in the small club we started there in McLean around 1956-57?)  Dale Greenhouse was one of the leaders of that.

About Me

I have been collecting barbed "wire" since the 1960s on the West Coast and East Coast.  I am a member of the ABWS and have published several articles in the "Collector."  I am interested in the history and designs of antique barbed fencing.  I use the term antique "barbed fencing" to emphasize that this field of interest includes not only wire-like designs, i.e. strands, but also sheet metal strips or "ribbon wire," metal bars and rods and wooden barbed fencing.  With a little luck I will publishing a book later this fall on antique barbed fencing designs, entitled "The Point of It All." The book focues on the hundreds of designs and thousands of patent variations and rationale of different inventors who tried to develop a "better mouse trap" or "better" barbed fencing. Being trained as zoologist, I couldn't help from attempting to develop a classification system based on similarities and differenceds in the structural designs and materials used in antique barbed fencing designs.
